The Great War is changing the world. Bill is asked to be a consultant for the rail system in England during the war. He sets sail on the Lusitania on a bright sunny day in May only to be torpedoed by a German submarine. Bill survives, but his life is shattered by a severe head injury. Abigail and her candy store on the Patapsco River becomes the family’s only source of income. Bill recovers some but relies heavily on Abigail. Billy’s visual handicap becomes more of a struggle as he matures. Once he learns of his father’s part in his disability, Billy becomes angry and at times, out-of-control. He ends up in jail. Will he find a path to forgive his father or will he turn to drink? It’s a life-or-death matter.
